BOURSCHEID

This impressive stronghold was the first time mentioned in 1095. It seems that the castle was built around the year 1000 on even older foundations. It was extended on different occasions. The outer wall with eleven towers dates to 1350. The big house from 1384 and the courtyard from 1477. The upper court is protected by a ditch and four towers dating back to the 15th century. Schenk von Schmidtburg buys the castle at the end of the 18th century and he starts repairs to the decaying castle. He was however not able to prevent further decay. The chapel collapsed during the 19th century and there were rumors about demolish the castle. It became however a listed historical building and in 1971 it was acquired by the state. Extensive repairs were done as a result that the stronghold can now be visited.
