FLORENNES

The history of this charming little town goes back very far in time. Already in the 9th century there was a castle that was probably not more than a defense tower to protect the area against the plundering Norseman.
The only thing that remains of the original feudal castle are tower foundations and wall foundations. All the other parts were rebuilt after the devastating fire of 1868. The original feudal castle was however already transformed into a luxurious dwelling in the 15th century. You still can see the armorial bearings of the Beaufort Spontin family that once ruled over this area. The inner court is currently used as a playground for a school. I have no clue for what the castle is used but as you can see on the pictures it is currently in a state of decay.
